Drill holes save digging for bridge piers
Six columns beneath abutments of St. Louis expressway bridge reach more than 30 ft to bearing; 3000 yd of digging and backfilling were saved by building each column inside auger hole lined with steel; bearing capacity was tested by jackhammer drilling 4 ft to bedrock; footing was poured and Sonotube form set in place for column wedged to drill-hole casing; rebar cage was made outside, lowered into form and concreting of column finished.
