Research relating to bridge decks in Virginia
Studies of surface roughness and characteristics of concrete as affected by screeding and finishing methods; of all screeding and finishing methods now being used, full span length mechanical longitudinal oscillating type screed followed by longitudinal belting operation produced smoothest decks on simple span bridges; it is concluded that primary cause of variable or borderline performance of concrete in bridge decks is variable or borderline fresh concrete; for class of mixtures used in these decks minimum air content of 5% was found to be necessary in order to provide void spacing factor of 0.0055 in. while air contents of 4% provided spacing factors below 0.0075.
