The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) studied seven high performance concrete (HPC) bridges to determine the permeability of the concretes. The new low permeability specification was used for five of the structures. All of the bridges are completed, and six are open to traffic. Two of the bridges, both containing slag as the pozzolanic material are described. The bridge deck concretes with a conventional w/cm of 0.45 or less provide the Coulomb values specified by the VDOT as long as a pozzolan or slag is used. Proper construction practices are needed to produce quality concrete elements. The rapid permeability test provides satisfactory results and is used in the specifications for accepting concrete.
