It is shown that tensile member can have reduced cross section area if it has been prestressed by means of cable; fundamental differences between prestressed steel and prestressed concrete; results of test of trussed girder with prestressed lower member; example also given of hangar made of prestressed steel; reference to proposals, by F.DISCHINGER, for composite prestressed steel and concrete bridge in which concrete slab cast on steel plate and prestressed, would be rigidly attached to top flange of steel girder. (See also Structural Engr v 28 n 11 Nov 1950 p 285-95)
