The alteration of silica bricks in open-hearth furnaces
In order to obtain direct comparison under works conditions, sample bricks were built into one of side walls of open-hearth furnace hearth at Swedish steel mill; these bricks were particularly well burnt; at same time bricks, also of superior quality, of German manufacture, were placed in walls of same furnace hearth; tests made at Hoganas show that, although softening point of bricks is about same as that of standard silica brick, resistance to corrosion by slag decreases owing to admixture of considerable quantity of ferric oxide.
