Model studies of storm-sewer drop shafts
Improved design for high-head drop shafts was developed by Dept of Public Works of St. Paul, Minn as part of long range program of storm-sewer construction; preliminary model tests indicated destructive forces of falling water were primarily responsible for damage to base of shaft; experimental study led to development of impact-type of energy dissipators which removed excess energy from flow and created stable outflow conditions, with minimum air entrainment.
