Stresses in reinforced concrete shields for nuclear reactors
Analysis of thermal stresses in slab of reinforced concrete, neglecting shrinkage stresses, creep, and variation of physical properties with temperature; it is shown that in flat slab, temperature difference of about 50 C can be allowed with only nominal amount of reinforcement to control cracking; to reduce difference to 50 C by means of interposed "thermal shield" is more economical than to apply heavy reinforcement needed over 87C.
