The influence of foliation on point load strength anisotropy of foliated rocks
Abstract The engineering behaviour of rocks depends upon whether the fabric is isotropic or anisotropic, which is a reflection of its genetic environment. Even though anisotropy in fabric can occur in nearly all natural environments, metamorphic terrains usually offer the main source of anisotropic fabric elements. Metamorphic anisotropic fabrics, collectively known as foliation, may be quantified by a foliation index determined from optical microscopic or X-ray diffraction analysis depending upon the degree of coarseness or fineness of the rock. On the basis of this index, the role of foliation in conditioning anisotropy in point load strength has been quantified. The practical significance of the resultant classification scheme lies in the fact that reliable predictions of point load strength anisotropy of foliated rocks can be made on the basis of a critical analysis of their primary anisotropic fabrics—foliation.
