Coupler for use on an Excavator Dipper Arm
-16 The safety requirements for couplers for use on excavators has often lead to complex designs, often requiring a second hydraulic circuit, or complex locking mechanisms. The present invention achieves the safety objectives with the use of only a single actuator and 5 a single simple pivoting locking member. Extension of the single actuator is assisted by two compression springs, a first compression spring and a second compression spring. The second spring has a higher spring rate when compared to the spring rate of the first spring, and the sequencing of the operation of the locking member is controlled by the difference between the spring rate of the first spring and the spring rate of the second 10 spring. A higher spring rate of the second spring causes the actuator to move the locking member towards its retracted condition during a final portion of a retraction of the linear actuator during a disengagement process.
