Method for carrying out work on a track system (9) using a rail vehicle (1) which comprises a track motor car (2) having at least one electrically operable treatment device (4, 5) and having an energy supply device (15) for providing electrical energy, and which comprises a trailer car (3) coupled to the track motor car (2) and having an energy storage device (16) for providing electrical energy, wherein the rail vehicle (1) is driven to a track location for treatment, wherein the trailer car (3) is decoupled from the track motor car (2), and wherein the track location for treatment is treated using the track motor car (2). The invention is characterized in that before and/or after the treatment using the track motor car (2), the track location is treated using the trailer car (3) by virtue of an electric traction drive (14) of the trailer car (3) and a treatment device (6-8) of the trailer car (3) being supplied with electrical energy from the energy storage device (16). In this way, the trailer car (3) is used autonomously for track treatment.
