The invention relates to a method for carrying out work on a rail line (9) by means of a rail vehicle (1), comprising a rail vehicle (2) having at least one electrically operable work device (4, 5) and an energy supply device (15) for providing electrical energy, and a trailer (3) coupled to the rail vehicle (2), said trailer having an energy storage device (16) for providing electrical energy, the rail vehicle (1) travels to a rail position to be treated, the trailer (3) is decoupled from the rail vehicle (2), and the rail position to be treated is treated by means of the rail vehicle (2). According to the invention, the rail position is processed by means of the trailer (3) before and/or after the work performed by the rail vehicle (2) in such a way that an electrical traction drive (14) of the trailer (3) and a work device (6-8) of the trailer (3) are supplied with electrical energy by an energy storage device (16). In this way, the track work is autonomously carried out by means of the trailer (2).
