WIDE PLATFORM FALL PREVENTION AND FALL RESISTANCE MECHANISM
A fall prevention mechanism for wide platforms. Personnel working on wide platforms that are above foot in height are required by regulation to be protected from falling. Platforms such as roofs of containers and transport truck trailers are long as well as wide, necessitating a protection system which allows the worker to traverse along the platform for ease of use. The invention that is disclosed in this patent is a mechanism that incorporates lifeline attachment points directly to either side of the platform, and attachment to side rails of the platform to facilitate traversing along the length of the platform. A collapsible, spring loaded cross member connects one side to the other. The collapsible feature allows the unit to self-adjust to ensure full engagement regardless of platform width variations. Since the lifelines are attached at the point where the mechanism is engaged with the side of the platform, the cross member is not required to withstand any fall prevention forces. A fuse-linkage connects the lifeline to the centre of cross member to allow for longitudinal traversing while ensuring that fall prevention forces are only experienced by the side engagement elements of the mechanism.
