The invention specifically relates to a method for preparing silicon nitride or silicon nitride/silicon carbide composite powder. Technical scheme I comprises the following steps: by using 20 to 30wt% of elemental silicon and 70 to 80wt% of alkali metal inorganic salt as raw materials, adding 0 to 3wt% of a catalyst to the raw materials, mixing and drying; holding for 2 to 5h in a nitrogen atmosphere at a temperature of 1200 to 1400 DEG C, naturally cooling, and washing to obtain silicon nitride powder. Technical scheme II comprises the following steps: by using 5 to 15wt% of silicon source containing substance, 70 to 80wt% of alkali metal inorganic salt and 5 to 15wt% of carbon black as raw materials, adding 0 to 3wt% of a catalyst to the raw materials, mixing and drying; holding for 2 to 5h in a nitrogen atmosphere at a temperature of 1200 to 1400 DEG C, naturally cooling, and washing to obtain silicon nitride/silicon carbide composite powder. The method provided by the invention has the characteristics of low production cost, simple process and easy industrialized production; the prepared silicon nitride or silicon nitride/silicon carbide composite powder has uniform granularity, good crystal morphology and high phase purity.
