The invention discloses an excavator provided with a counter weight positioning detection device and a counter weight installing method and relates to the technical field of engineering machinery. The excavator comprises a counter weight provided with two parallel grooves formed in the bottom and supporting parts matched with the grooves formed in the bottom of the counter weight, threaded holes are formed in the grooves, installing holes are formed in the supporting parts, and the counter weight is connected and fixed to the supporting part through counter weight bolts. The excavator further comprises a positioning detection device, wherein the positioning detection device is provided with an image pickup portion and an image display portion. A base is arranged at the bottom of the image pickup portion, the image pickup portion extends into the installing holes formed in the bottom of the supporting parts, and the upper end face of the base is connected with the lower end faces of the installing holes formed in the bottoms of the supporting parts. By means of the counter weight installing method, an operator can observe whether the installing holes formed in the supporting parts are vertically flush with the threaded holes formed in the grooves at the bottom of the counter weight without standing under an excavator main platform, the safety and operating convenience of the operator are improved, and meanwhile the counter weight installing efficiency is improved.
