The invention relates to magnesium aluminate spinel ultrafine powder and a preparation method of the ultrafine powder. The method adopts the technical scheme that the method comprises the steps of mixing a magnesium-containing material and an aluminum-containing material according to a matter amount ratio of Al2O3 and MgO as (1-4):1, adding water and an additive into a mixture, stirring or grinding to form slurry, washing and separating the slurry to form precursor colloid, adding absolute ethyl alcohol into the obtained precursor colloid for washing for 2-3 times, adding an alcohol dispersing agent for dispersion to form pretreated colloid, drying the precursor colloid and the pretreated colloid, and carrying out heat treatment for 0.5-5.5h at 400-1200 DEG C to form the magnesium aluminate spinel ultrafine powder. The method has the characteristics of simple technology and easiness for industrial production, and the prepared magnesium aluminate spinel ultrafine powder is narrow in particle size, uniform and controllable in size and regular in morphology.
