The invention discloses an electromagnetic vibration damping system for a bridge, and a control method. The electromagnetic vibration damping system comprises an oscillator and a circuit frequency converter which are respectively arranged on two bridge pier ear walls; a vibration damper is arranged on a bridge column; the vibration damper comprises a structure layer for a supporting, and a plurality of agitators arranged at the bottom of the structure layer, wherein a space above the agitators is divided into two layers through an eccentric wheel, and a plurality of electromagnetic coils are arranged in each layer respectively; a motor is arranged at the top of the structure layer, and the motor penetrates through the eccentric wheel to be connected with the agitators; the oscillator is connected with the electromagnetic coils through the circuit frequency converter, and the oscillator is also connected with the agitators. Through the adoption of the electromagnetic vibration damping system, the resonance generated by pedestrians and vehicles can be eliminated; the states of the bridge can be monitored in real time, and the electromagnetic vibration damping system can send out different reverse vector waves according to different states of the bridge so as to counteract adverse vibration, so that the structural safety accidents caused by the agitation of pedestrians, vehicles and the bridge can be avoided.
