The invention relates to an insulation material for an exhaust pipe, in particular to a composite modified kaolin-carbonized foaming phenolic resin based insulation material for a forklift engine exhaust pipe and a preparation method of the insulation material. During preparation of the insulation material, nano-zinc oxide is added in a phenolic resin foaming process in advance to improve the carbonization effect of phenolic resin foam, so that the insulation material subjected to carbonization treatment is low in hot-shrinkage rate, stable in size and higher in strength; the insulation material comprises an adhesive prepared by compositing such matters as micro powder of kaolin and nano-aluminum sol; the adhesive not only has bonding and forming effects, but also can be utilized for further improving the mechanical property of the insulation material subjected to high-temperature treatment, so that the thermal stability and the porosity of the insulation material are improved. The insulation material provided by the invention has the advantages of being lightweight, insulated, uniform and tiny in pore, long in service life, low in price, and environmentally friendly; insulation plates, insulation sleeves and other finished products made of the insulation material are excellent in insulation effect, efficient and durable; through the adoption of the insulation material, the working environment of a forklift engine is effectively improved.
