The invention discloses a castable used for ladles and a preparation method thereof. The castable is prepared from high-alumina bauxite aggregate with grain size of 0-25mm, high-alumina bauxite fine powder with grain size of 200 meshes, silicon dioxide micro powder with grain size not more than 0.02mu m, silicon carbide fine powder with grain size of 500-700 meshes, cement, sodium polyphosphate accounting for 0.02-1% of the above five raw materials and explosion-proof fibers accounting for 0.01-1% of the above five raw materials. The castable and the preparation method have the positive effects that silicon carbide recycle powder generated in the industry of grinding tools and abrasives is recycled, thus reducing environmental pollution and reducing the costs of the raw materials; the castable has high application safety factor, has service life more than 800 times on 100 tons of KR hot metal pretreatment ladles and achieves the aims of safety, low cost and material recycling.
