The invention relates to a porous silicon nitride ceramic with excellent high-temperature performance and a preparation method thereof. The preparation method of the porous silicon nitride ceramic comprises the following steps: (1) mixing silicon powder, silicon nitride powder and a sintering aid to obtain mixed powder; and (2) carrying out compression molding on the obtained mixed powder to obtain a green body; and (3) embedding the obtained green body by adopting embedding powder consisting of silicon powder and silicon nitride powder, and then conducting igniting in a nitrogen atmosphere toinitiate self-propagating synthesis so as to obtain the porous silicon nitride ceramic, wherein the sintering aid is at least one selected from Yb2O3 and La2O3, and the addition amount of the sintering aid in the mixed powder is 0.1-0.6 wt% of the total mass of the silicon powder and the silicon nitride powder.
