The invention discloses ultrafine aluminum oxide for a lithium battery ceramic diaphragm and a preparation method thereof, and belongs to the technical field of alumina preparation. The preparation method of superfine aluminum oxide for a lithium battery ceramic diaphragm comprises the following steps of: (1) pulping an alumina raw material and water; carrying out primary grinding on the mixture;grinding the aluminum oxide slurry for 2-4h by using a zirconium oxide grinding ball with the diameter of 1mm until the particle size D50 is 0.5-0.8 micron; (2) sieving the ground aluminum oxide slurry with a 500-mesh sieve; adding PEG800 and PEG2000 into the aluminum oxide slurry, then grinding the aluminum oxide slurry for the second time, and using zirconium oxide grinding balls with the diameter of 0.4 mm for grinding the aluminum oxide slurry for 1.5 h to 2.5 h till the particle size D50 ranges from 0.3 micron to 0.5 micron; (3) sieving the ground aluminum oxide slurry with a 600-mesh sieve, dehydrating the obtained slurry to obtain an aluminum oxide filter cake, and drying the aluminum oxide filter cake; and (4) carrying out jet milling on the dried aluminum oxide, crushing agglomerated particles, removing impurities in the aluminum oxide, and then sieving with an 800-mesh sieve without oversize products to obtain aluminum oxide powder.
