A shovel, a shovel control method, and a topographic data updating method are provided. The shovel is provided with: a lower traveling body (1); an upper revolving body (3) mounted on the lower traveling body (1); an excavation attachment attached to the upper revolving body (3); a posture detection device (M3) for detecting the posture of the excavation attachment; and a controller (30). The controller (30) is provided with: a ground surface shape information acquisition unit (33) that acquires information relating to the current shape of the ground surface to be excavated on the basis of changes in the posture of the excavation attachment detected by the posture detection device (M3); and an excavation control unit (34) that controls the excavation attachment on the basis of the information relating to the current shape of the ground to be excavated acquired by the ground shape information acquisition unit (33).
