The invention discloses whisker toughened zirconia ceramic and a preparation method thereof. The whisker toughened zirconia ceramic comprises a zirconia ceramic matrix, whiskers and a toughening layer arranged on the surfaces of the whiskers, wherein the toughening layer is a single interface layer with uniform components or a composite interface layer with multiple components, and the components of the toughening layer comprise one or more selected from Si3N4, BN nitride, SiC carbide and graphite. According to the invention, an interface layer inactive in reaction with zirconia ceramic is designed through a special interface layer preparation process, so the problem of secondary sintering reaction between the oxide whiskers and the zirconia ceramic matrix is solved; and the application scope of the whisker toughened zirconia ceramic is wide, and the whisker toughened zirconia ceramic is worthy of vigorous popularization.
