The invention discloses a self-climbing type protection frame and a climbing method thereof. The protection frame comprises anti-falling assemblies, guide rail assemblies, a frame body, a lifting steel beam and an electric hoist; the anti-falling assemblies are arranged on a wall body in at least two rows; multiple sets of guide rail assemblies are arranged, each set of guide rail assemblies comprise two guide rails, each guide rail is provided with a side guide groove and a side insertion groove, and penetrating pieces penetrate through the side insertion grooves to enable the guide rails to be arranged in corresponding installation grooves in the anti-falling assemblies; the frame body is a double-row frame parallel to the wall body, at least two sets of main body vertical rods are arranged on the frame body, each set of main body vertical rods comprise two inner side main body vertical rods, a plurality of guide wheels are arranged on each inner side main body vertical rod, and the guide wheels are arranged on side guide grooves in the two sides of the guide rails in a rolling mode; the lifting steel beam is arranged on a portion, below the anti-falling assembly at the highest position, of the wall body; the electric hoist is arranged on a hanging ring of the lifting steel beam, and a hanging wire of the electric hoist is arranged below the frame body. The protection frame can automatically climb, is low in climbing difficulty and high in climbing efficiency, can reduce cracks generated between the frame body and the wall body, and is high in quality and low in cost.
