The invention discloses a polycarboxylic acid water reducing agent for reducing concrete viscosity and a preparation method thereof, and relates to the technical field of water reducing agents. The water reducing agent comprises the following raw materials in parts by weight: 25-35 parts of an acrylic acid solution, 1-3 parts of a complexing agent, 5-8 parts of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid, 3-5 parts of an active protective agent, 2-4 parts of an oxidizing agent, 5-6 parts of an ammonium persulfate aqueous solution, 6-8 parts of a chain transfer agent, 2-4 parts of a viscosity reducer, 0.05-0.1 part of a catalyst, 3-6 parts of a sodium hydroxide solution and 40-50 parts of deionized water. The polycarboxylic acid water reducing agent for reducing the viscosity of the concrete prepared by the method is stable in performance and convenient to transport after being prepared into powder, the concrete workability of the water reducing agent is good, the setting time, and the strength and other performance of the concrete are not influenced. Through design of a formula and a polymerization process, the prepared polycarboxylic acid water reducing agent powder is simple in preparation process and can be widely applied to the field of pumping concrete and mortar.
