The method comprises the steps that parameter data of the excavator in a preset time period and the environment temperature of the place where the excavator is located are obtained, wherein the parameter data comprise the actual cooling water temperature of an engine, the rotating speed of the engine and the oil consumption of the engine; based on the environment temperature, the rotating speed of the engine, the oil consumption of the engine and a first cooling water temperature model, the theoretical cooling water temperature of the engine of the excavator is calculated; and based on the actual cooling water temperature of the engine and the theoretical cooling water temperature of the engine, fault diagnosis is conducted on the excavator. According to the method, abnormality is found before the actual cooling water temperature of the engine reaches the alarm value, the fault of the excavator is judged and processed in advance, and fault expansion is prevented.
