The invention relates to the field of cement, and discloses thermal insulation mortar prepared from a red mud-based alkali-activated cementing material for buildings. The thermal insulation mortar comprises the following raw materials by weight: 40-52 parts of a red mud-based alkali-activated cementing material, 35-52 parts of a solid raw material, and 12-17 parts of an additive. The preparation method of the thermal insulation mortar comprises the steps of removing impurities in the solid raw materials; mixing and pouring the solid raw materials into a smashing mechanism to be smashed; screening the crushed solid raw materials by adopting a screening mechanism; putting the mud-based alkali-activated cementing material and the solid raw materials into a stirring mechanism, and stirring to obtain a mixture; uniformly stirring and mixing an additive, adding the mixture, and continuously stirring; and adding vitrified light hollow microspheres and aluminum oxide hollow spheres, uniformly stirring, metering and bagging. When various waste materials are fully utilized, impurities in the raw materials are removed by adopting the screening mechanism, and then the raw materials are uniformly crushed and stirred again, so that the solid raw materials can be more fully stirred, and the quality of mortar is improved.
