The invention provides a multifunctional additive for mortar, a preparation method of the multifunctional additive and a gypsum-based light plastering mortar composition, and relates to the technical field of building materials. The multifunctional additive for the mortar, provided by the invention, is prepared from the following components in parts by weight: 10 to 20 parts of cocamidopropyl betaine, 5 to 15 parts of methylene bisacrylamide, 2 to 10 parts of polyoxyethylene, 2 to 5 parts of nonionic polyacrylamide and 55 to 85 parts of an anti-caking agent. After the multifunctional additive for the mortar is added into a plastering mortar system, an air entraining agent and starch ether do not need to be additionally added, production is relatively simple, and the adding amount of glass beads can be reduced by 20-30%; and compared with the conventional plastering mortar, the plastering mortar composition prepared from the multifunctional additive provided by the invention has higher mortar strength, and the surface of a coated and dried matrix is fuller.
