The invention discloses a retarder for lightweight gypsum and a preparation method thereof. The retarder for the light gypsum comprises the following raw materials in parts by weight: 300-350 parts of a protein component raw material, 50-150 parts of a pure amino acid raw material, 10-30 parts of a pH value regulator, 20-60 parts of an organic acid, an acid tincture or an ester raw material, 0.1-0.5 part of an odor regulator, 2-8 parts of a reaction catalyst and 350-650 parts of water, the protein component raw material is dissolved in the water, and the mixture is stirred uniformly to obtain the retarder for the light gypsum. The preparation method comprises the following steps: adding a part of a pH value regulator, carrying out a hydrolysis reaction, sequentially adding a pure amino acid raw material, an organic acid, an acid tincture or ester raw material and a reaction catalyst, adjusting the pH value to 7-8, carrying out a heating reaction to obtain a mixture, adding an odor regulator, cooling, and uniformly stirring to obtain the retarder for light gypsum. Through the mode, the retarder for the light gypsum and the preparation method of the retarder have the advantages that the retarding effect is good, the strength loss is small, the influence on the foaming efficiency of foamed gypsum is reduced, and the gypsum setting time is convenient to adjust.
