Provided is a boron nitride sintered body containing a plurality of coarse particles having a length of 20 [mu] m or more and fine particles smaller than the plurality of coarse particles, the plurality of coarse particles crossing each other when viewed in a cross-section. Provided is a method for producing a boron nitride sintered body, the method comprising: a raw material preparation step for obtaining bulk boron nitride having an average particle diameter of 10-200 [mu] m by firing a mixture containing boron carbonitride and a boron compound in a nitrogen atmosphere; and a sintering step in which a complex containing the bulk boron nitride and a sintering aid is molded and heated to obtain a boron nitride sintered body containing coarse particles having a cross-sectional length of 20 [mu] m or more and fine particles smaller than the coarse particles.
