Provided is a boron nitride sintered body containing boron nitride particles and pores, the pores having an average pore diameter of less than 2 [mu] m. Provided is a method for producing a boron nitride sintered body, the method comprising: a nitriding step for obtaining a sintered product containing boron carbonitride by sintering a boron carbide powder in a nitrogen pressurized atmosphere; and a sintering step for obtaining a boron nitride sintered body containing boron nitride particles and pores by molding and heating a complex containing the fired product and a sintering aid, the sintering aid containing calcium carbonate and an oxide of boron, and the complex containing a boron compound and a calcium compound in a total of 1-20 parts by mass with respect to 100 parts by mass of the fired product.
