The refractory material for the tundish insulating layer is prepared from the following raw materials in percentage by mass: 50 to 65 percent of heavy aggregate, 20 to 30 percent of light filler, 5 to 10 percent of binding agent, 3 to 8 percent of additive, 3 to 8 percent of volume stabilizer and 0.5 to 3 percent of metal fiber. The refractory material is mixed with water to obtain a mixture, the mixture is poured into a gap between a tundish and a blank film or directly sprayed or smeared on the inner wall of the tundish, and the tundish heat preservation layer can be obtained after forming and drying. The novel refractory material is developed and is used for preparing the tundish insulating layer, so that the insulating layer has the characteristics of good insulating property, high strength, thermal shock resistance, slag corrosion resistance, long service life and the like.
