The invention discloses a microcrystalline aluminum oxide grinding medium which comprises the following components: ceramic metal oxide and clay in a mass ratio of (18-19): (1-2), wherein the ceramic metal oxide is a composite oxide of an aluminum element, a magnesium element and a calcium element, and the molar ratio of the aluminum element to the magnesium element to the calcium element is (44.5-97.5): (1.2-2.1): (0.88-0.92). The invention discloses a preparation method of the microcrystalline alumina grinding medium, which comprises the following steps: dissolving the water-soluble aluminum salt, the water-soluble magnesium salt and the water-soluble calcium salt in water, adjusting the system to be alkaline, and roasting the precipitate at the roasting temperature of 900-1000 DEG C to obtain a ceramic metal oxide; the preparation method comprises the following steps: adding the ceramic metal oxide and the clay into water, uniformly mixing, adding the polyvinyl alcohol, uniformly mixing to obtain slurry, performing spray granulation, molding, and sintering at 1400-1500 DEG C to obtain the microcrystalline aluminum oxide grinding medium.
