The invention discloses a geopolymer core-shell structure lightweight aggregate and a preparation method thereof. The method comprises the following steps: preparing slag, silica fume, fly ash, gypsum and instant sodium silicate into a calcined clay-based green and environment-friendly cementing material in proportion; putting the core material particles into a lightweight aggregate granulation device, then putting a calcined clay-based green environment-friendly cementing material, pouring the quick lime slurry, and meanwhile, pouring a mixing agent for granulation to form a primary cold-bonded aggregate; a curing process combining natural curing (12h), moisturizing curing (12h) and steam curing (12h) is adopted for the primary cold-bonded aggregate. According to the slag-based core-shell structure lightweight aggregate and the preparation method thereof, the slag-based core-shell structure lightweight aggregate is energy-saving, low in consumption, low in cost, capable of saving natural resources, simplified in processing flow, capable of realizing solid waste recycling, low in water absorption rate and high in single particle bearing capacity.
