The invention relates to a system for determining a swing boom angle of an excavator. The invention relates to a system for determining the swing arm angle of an excavator. The excavator comprises a frame; and a swing boom. The system includes a first measurement sensor configured to determine a first temporary swing boom angle of the swing boom relative to the frame. This angle is one of discrete magnitudes of one or more intermittent first temporary swing boom angles, each discrete magnitude of the first temporary swing boom angles being spaced apart from each other by a value of at least one degree. The system also includes a second measurement sensor configured to be mounted on the swing boom and determine a second temporary swing boom angle of the swing boom relative to the frame, the angle being from a non-discrete range of angles; and a processing unit. The processing unit is configured to receive the first and second temporary swing boom angles and determine a swing boom angle by applying at least one of a filter and an algorithm to the first and second temporary swing boom angles.
