The invention relates to nanocrystalline aluminum oxide ceramic and a preparation method thereof.The method comprises the steps that acid liquor is added into pseudo-boehmite suspension liquid, stirring is conducted, and evenly-dispersed aluminum oxide sol is obtained; concentrating and aging the alumina sol to obtain alumina gel; drying the alumina gel to obtain alumina xerogel with plasticity; and carrying out compression molding on the alumina xerogel, and then carrying out segmented calcination treatment so as to enable the grain size to be small, thereby obtaining the nanocrystalline alumina ceramic. The technical problem that the preparation cost of the existing nanocrystalline aluminum oxide ceramic is relatively high is solved.
