The invention provides magnesium oxide for an oriented silicon steel separant, the magnesium oxide comprises 40-80 wt% of magnesium oxide fine particles with a particle size of less than 7 [mu] m and 20-60 wt% of magnesium oxide coarse particles with a particle size of 7-100 [mu] m, and the CAA40% of the magnesium oxide is 100-170s. By controlling the particle size of MgO particles for the oriented silicon steel separant, the air permeability of the separant can be improved, so that the possibility of oxidation of a steel plate is reduced, the forsterite film defect of the steel plate is reduced, and the problems of coil loosening and coil collapse caused by incomplete film covering, crystal exposure defect and insufficient friction force between steel plates are avoided; and thus, the uniformity of the forsterite film is improved. In addition, the MgO is stable in performance, not prone to hydration and suitable for forming a uniform forsterite film on the oriented silicon steel plate.
