The preparation method comprises the following steps: (1) adding water into a reaction container, heating to 70-90 DEG C, adding polyethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate and methacrylic acid, and introducing nitrogen for protection; dropwise adding an initiator, wherein dropwise adding is completed within 1 h; continuously stirring and carrying out copolymerization reaction for 1-4 hours to obtain a polycarboxylate water reducing agent primary product; (2) adding copper bromide, 2, 2, 4-trimethyl-1, 3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate and dimethyl adipate into the reaction container, continuously reacting for 20-50 minutes, and then adding a regulator to regulate the pH value to 8-9.5, thereby obtaining the modified polycarboxylic acid water reducer. The water reducing agent has excellent water reducing effect and slump retaining property.
