Environment-friendly friction material composition
The invention relates to an environmentally friendly friction material composition. A friction material substantially free of elemental metals, metal alloys, and antimony trioxide, wherein the solid lubricant comprises a metal sulfide. The disclosed friction material compositions are considered to be more environmentally friendly than conventional compositions. However, substantial elimination of elemental metals, metal alloys and antimony trioxide from the disclosed compositions is achieved in a manner that appears to not substantially affect the friction performance and noise behavior of the corresponding brake component. In addition, at least some of the disclosed compositions are believed to increase the service life of the brake assembly and reduce the wear of the rotor. The longer brake assembly life and lower rotor wear provide additional benefits in reducing non-exhaust related vehicle emissions, which further mitigates the environmental impact of traffic emissions.
