The invention belongs to the technical field of foaming materials, and particularly relates to a magnesium slag-based foaming material and a preparation method thereof. The magnesium slag-based foaming material is prepared from the following components in percentage by mass: 56% of magnesium slag, 1.7% of corncob, 27% of water glass, 4.4% of sodium hydroxide and 10.9% of tap water. According to the magnesium slag-based foaming material, the corncobs are subjected to thermal decomposition at a high temperature to form pores, so that the foaming performance of the magnesium slag-based foaming material is effectively improved; and the sodium silicate and the sodium hydroxide are added, so that the activity of the magnesium slag can be excited, the compressive strength of the magnesium slag-based foaming material is enhanced, and the contradictory problem that the porosity and the strength are not compatible is solved. The magnesium slag-based foaming material can adsorb metal ions in water, and is beneficial to promoting solid waste resource utilization and development of wastewater treatment functional materials.
