The invention discloses a hafnium oxide continuous ceramic fiber and a preparation method thereof. The method comprises the following steps: carrying out melt spinning on a hafnium oxide polymer precursor block to obtain a fiber precursor; performing constant-temperature and constant-humidity treatment to obtain non-melting fibers; slowly heating and sintering to realize inorganic treatment to obtain inorganic fibers; and performing high-temperature heat-preservation sintering to realize ceramization treatment to obtain the hafnium oxide continuous ceramic fiber. The hafnium source is coordinated by using two complexing agents, the linear degree and molecular weight of the precursor are improved by adjusting the addition amount and variety of the two complexing agents, the hafnium oxide continuous ceramic fiber is prepared through a melt spinning method, and the obtained fiber is small in diameter and high in strength.
