Lightweight core-shell aggregate and concrete
The invention provides a high-strength and light-weight core-shell type aggregate prepared from waste materials. The aggregates comprise a porous core material, which may be one or more of perlite, vermiculite, hollow microspheres, expanded polystyrene, or charcoal. Forming at least one layer of shell layer material on the core material, wherein the shell layer material comprises one or more of blast furnace slag particles, fly ash, hollow microspheres, recycled concrete powder, recycled glass powder or charcoal powder. The high-strength lightweight core-shell aggregate of the present invention has a loose bulk density of less than about 980 kg/m < 3 >, a compressive strength of greater than about 4 MPa, a water absorption of less than 20%, and a carbon emission of about 181 kg carbon dioxide equivalent (kgCO2eq) or less per ton. Lightweight concrete having a density of 1900 kg/m < 3 > or less is formed by mixing high strength, lightweight core-shell aggregate with cement.
