The invention discloses a viscous damper with variable damping strength and a method. The viscous damper comprises a cylinder barrel, damping liquid sealed in the cylinder barrel, a piston rod arranged in the cylinder barrel, a middle damping piston, two end pistons and two reset elastic pieces. The piston rod moves towards one end, the middle piston connected with the piston rod also moves along with the piston rod, and at the moment, damping force is generated by movement of viscous media in a gap between the middle piston and the cylinder barrel. When the middle piston is in contact with the end pistons, the middle piston and the end pistons move together, equivalently, the width of the pistons is increased, viscous media between the pistons and the cylinder barrel are increased, damping force generated by motion of the viscous media is increased, and meanwhile the springs are compressed by the pistons, spring elasticity is added, and the damping force is further increased. And during returning, the reset elastic piece can push the end piston to move and return to the initial position, the damping force can be adjusted in a self-adaptive mode according to the actual stress degree, the overall structure is stable, reliable and safe, and the multi-stage self-adaptive adjusting effect of the damping force is achieved.
