Method for producing cement clinker using stainless steel slag
In a method for manufacturing a cement clinker, a feedstock comprising at least one stainless steel slag is calcined and combusted to produce the cement clinker. The cement clinker can only contain a limited amount of hexavalent chromium, so that the chromium content of the stainless steel slag needs to be limited. This is achieved by solidifying the liquid steel slag such that it comprises a small amount of fine powder sufficient. The fines produced when these fines and/or the coarser fraction of the pulverized steel slag are used to recover stainless steel are used as powdered stainless steel slag for the manufacture of cement clinker. It has been found that these fines have a chromium content that is indeed much less than sand and a coarser coagulation fraction produced from solidified stainless steel slag. The stainless steel slag partially replaces a traditional lime source, carbon dioxide emission can be reduced, and the energy requirement of the cement kiln is lowered. And the powdery stainless steel slag does not need to be finely ground and melted immediately in the rotary kiln.
