The subject of the invention is a method of monitoring a water meter, this meter comprising a motor-operated valve (6) with its electrical motor means housed in a case (16), which motor-operated valve is connected to a removable module (7) housing electronics for controlling the operation of the valve, said method being characterized in that the integrity of the connection between the module (7) and, at least indirectly, the valve (6) is monitored and, before said module and said valve are separated, the valve is closed and/or said operation is signalled.
