The paver (100) has a towing machine (50), a movable screed (4) and a measuring device (60) with an inclination sensor for determining a layer thickness of a road pavement (6) that is newly laid by the screed. The measuring device determines the layer thickness at an intended location relative to a direction of travel behind a rear edge (10) of the screed. The measuring device is mounted on the paver to enable determination of the thickness of the layer independently of a geometric shape and/or a movement of the screed. The measuring device is detachably mounted to the towing machine.
