The invention relates to a locking mechanism (4) for a plug connection unit (1) comprising a first locking assembly (4a) and a second locking assembly (4'a), wherein, in a blocking position, the locking mechanism (4) blocks plugging of the first locking assembly (4a) into the second locking assembly (4'a) or unplugging of the first locking assembly (4a), which has been plugged into the second locking assembly (4'a), and wherein, in an unlocked position, the locking mechanism (4) enables plugging of the first locking assembly (4a) into the second locking assembly (4'a) or unplugging of the first locking assembly (4a), which has been plugged into the second locking assembly (4'a). The first locking assembly (4a) has a latching head (6a) having a specific geometry, and the second locking assembly (4'a) has a receptacle (9a) having a through-opening (10a) having a specific geometry, wherein, in the blocking position, the specific geometry of the through-opening (10a) is shifted and/or rotated in relation to the specific geometry of the latching head (6a) such that the specific geometries have no congruence, and wherein, in the unlocked position, the specific geometry of the through-opening (10a) is shifted and/or rotated in relation to the specific geometry of the latching head (6a) such that the specific geometries are congruent. The invention furthermore relates to a plug connection unit (1) having a locking mechanism (4) and to a method for controlling a locking mechanism.
