A hinge 1 comprises a pair of hinge plates 10,20 connected on an axis (Fig 1, X-X). At least part of the edge, that is not adjacent to the axis, of at least one plate has the shape of the outline of a series of overlapping circles. Preferably the notional circles will have the same diameter and will have centre points 13A-D, 32A-D that align along a path that is parallel to the axis. The centre points are preferably fixing holes. Preferably the edges of the hinge plates adjacent to the axis are straight. The outline shape of the hinge plate allows a recess for the hinge to be created, e.g. in a door Y, by forming a series of overlapping circular recesses (Fig 2, 31A-D) using a circular tool such as a drill bit (not shown).
