The spacing insert 5 has a portion for insertion between a batten 3 and waterproof roofing membrane 2 to hold the membrane away from the batten to maintain a desired sag, the gap between the membrane and batten allowing drainage and preventing water build up. The portion may be 10mm deep to maintain a 10mm gap. The insert may be a U-shaped clip made from resiliently flexible plastic material, having two limbs or jaws (11, 12, Figs. 2-5 or 16, 17, Figs. 6-9) defining a gap (13 or 18) for clamping onto a batten. One limb may be angled towards the gap to allow a tight friction fit. Limbs may also include projections (21, 22, Fig. 9) to bite the batten, enhancing grip. Also claimed is a roof including tiles or slates 4, an array of parallel battens 3 and watertight membrane 2, as well as a method of installation.
