An apparatus for gripping an elongate flexible element such as a washing line, rope or cord comprising at least one gripping element and a biasing means. The gripping element comprises first and second parts, each including: at one end a recessed portion for receiving an elongate flexible element; and at the other end a slot for receiving a part of the biasing means. The first and second parts are connected by a pivot member which is located between the recessed portion and the slot. Each part has a longitudinal axis and the recessed portions are oriented on opposing sides of the longitudinal axis of the respective first and second parts. When the first and second parts are aligned the recessed portions partially overlap to form an aperture for gripping the elongate flexible element. The slot on the first part lies at an acute angle to the longitudinal axis of the first part, and the slot on the second part lies at an obtuse angle to the longitudinal axis of the second part, and when the first and second parts are aligned the slots partially overlap.
