A step bolt 100 for securing to a vertical structure 16 such as a steel communication or electrical transmission tower. The step bolt 100 comprises an elongate body defining a first elongate threaded end portion 104 for inserting through an aperture in the vertical structure 16 and a second opposing elongate end portion 106. The elongate body further comprising an intermediate anchor portion 108 located between the first and second elongate end portions 104,106. The intermediate anchor portion 108 being operable in use to engage with a fall arrest anchor, where the first and second end portions 104,106 and the intermediate anchor portion 108 are aligned along a single axis. The cross-sectional diameter of the intermediate anchor portion 108 is less than that of the second end portion 106 and the cross-sectional diameter of the second end portion 106 is greater than that of an aperture of an anchor 120 such as a carabiner to be engaged, in use, with the intermediate anchor portion 108. Described in terms of ensuring forces caused by arresting the fall of an attached linesman would be retained close to the vertical structure 16 at a point of minimum bending stress of the step-bolt 100.
